The Hinge of Fate: Remembering the Siege of Waerenga-a-Hika Pā
A short look back at the ceremony held in Te Tairāwhiti recently, marking 160 years since the siege of Waerenga-a-Hika Pā. Presented by trustee Matai Smith, Te Tira Whakaari Trust was honoured to contribute to this important event and to stand alongside whānau, iwi and community in remembrance.
The commemoration acknowledged the more than 70 tūpuna of Rongowhakaata and Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki who lost their lives during the siege. It also recognised the hundreds who were incarcerated and sent to Wharekauri without trial, including Te Kooti Rikirangi, and the loss of whenua taurikura that followed. This was a time to reflect, to honour those who suffered, and to support ongoing efforts for truth, healing and restoration.
Te Karere captured a short story from the day, which you can view the Facebook reel
