Te Tira Whakaari Trust

Te Tira Whakaari is a charitable Trust set up in 2012

Te Tira Whakaari is a charitable trust set up in 2012 to advance education by educating and increasing public appreciation of the hi history of Te Kooti Rikirangi as part of the history of Māori, and the history of the interaction between Maori in Turanga and the Crown. It was established by Ngā Uri o Te Kooti Rikirangi, Rongowhakaata and Te Aitanga a Mahaki and Affiliates to tell the story of Te Kooti Rikirangi. Te Tira Whakaari acknowledges there is a lack of education available to the general public about the history of Te Kooti Rikirangi which has left a serious gap in public knowledge about the history of Māori and the interaction between Māori and the Crown in New Zealand. This has led to further stigmatisation of Ngā Uri o Te Kooti Rikirangi, and racial disharmony and social disintegration in the community.

The Trust is made up of representatives from Ngā Uri o Te Kooti Rikirangi Settlement Trust, Rongowhakaata Iwi Trust and Te Aitanga a Mahaki and Affiliates.
